Stay safe on your road trip with these tips

Summer vacations can look quite a bit different for families this year. For instance, instead of flying somewhere, you may be packing up the car and taking a road trip.

Road trips can be fun and allow families to spend a lot of time together. However, there are some risks, including the risk of getting into a car accident. To minimize the chances of a crash, you can take some precautions before and throughout your trip.

Before you leave

Before leaving, be sure your vehicle is as safe as possible. You might take it to have an oil change or have a mechanic look it over to ensure everything is working properly, including the air conditioning and windows. Have an emergency roadside kit in your car.

You should also look at your driving setup. If you are using maps or a GPS, make sure they are easily accessible and will not create a distraction. Review your route ahead of time to familiarize yourself with where you are going and where you may want to stop along the way.

If you are traveling with your kids, check to ensure their car seats or seatbelts are functioning correctly. Put any games, food or electronic devices in a place they or your passenger can easily get to without your help.

Having all these things set up before you leave can keep you safer and minimize potential distractions.

While you are driving

The most valuable thing you can do to stay safe while driving is to focus on driving. If you get tired or if your kids need you to do something, pull over. Trying to operate a vehicle while you are tired or distracted can quickly result in an accident.

Staying alert can also make it easier for you to spot a dangerous driver who could cause a crash. For instance, if you notice someone swerving or speeding, you can get out of their way. Paying attention can also allow you to navigate detours and unfamiliar roads more safely.

When you prioritize safety before you get in the car and while you are driving, you make it more likely that you will reach your destination safely.
