Dealing with insurers after an accident

Being involved in an accident is a car or truck accident is stressful. Dealing with insurance companies afterward can compound that stress.

Thankfully, there are things you can do do make the process of dealing with insurance after an accident easier. Here are three steps you can take:

1. Understand your plan

Along with your rights as an Ohio driver, you also have specific rights as an insured party under your particular insurance plan. It is important to realize and understand what restrictions you may face under your plan. If you do not understand any aspect of your plan, contact your insurer for clarity. Also, it is possible for insurers to make changes to plans, so it's wise to review your policy at least once a year.

2. Know your story

When recanting what happened, stick to the facts and be concise, honest and consistent. Do not worry about adding a great deal of detail or sharing what you think may have happened. State only what you know to be true, and make sure you are clear.

3. Know your options

The insurance company is not your friend. Even as a representative of your insurance company, the claim adjuster's job is to try to handle the case in the most efficient manner for the company. In other words, in a way that will cost the company the least amount of money. However, if you have evidence, file your claim properly and follow up on your claim, you increase the likelihood of recovering the compensation you deserve. Depending upon the extent of the accident and whether you have any injuries, you may also consider filing a personal injury claim.

Along with your insurer, the other party involved may contact you. You are not usually obligated to speak to them directly. Prior to providing any statement, either to your insurer or the other party's insurer, it's wise to consult with an attorney.
