Common reasons for pedestrian accidents

Walking is great for your health and saving money on transportation. But it does not come without risks. Did you know that there is one pedestrian death every 1.5 hours in the United States due to traffic crashes? While walking may seem like a relatively safe activity, it can be deadly if a car crashes into you.

One of the best ways to ensure you are safe as a pedestrian is knowing the dangers around you. Here are the top causes of pedestrian accidents

Distracted drivers

Distractions are abundant for motorists. If a motorist is texting, talking on the phone, eating or dealing with any other type of distraction, it puts you at significant risk of getting hurt. Make sure you try to make eye contact with drivers before crossing a street. Additionally, you can reduce your own distractions by putting your phone away and not wearing headphones.

Drunk drivers

It is no secret that driving under the influence is a hazardous behavior. Intoxication results in slow reaction times, poor judgment and impaired driving skills. A drunk driver can easily miss noticing a pedestrian. Avoid walking at night because this is when most drunk motorists are on the road.

Speeders

Unfortunately, a lot of drivers are in too much of a hurry. A motorist driving above the speed limit can easily collide with a pedestrian. Even if you are the most responsible and aware pedestrian who looks both ways before crossing a street at a crosswalk, you may get hit by a speeding vehicle.

Lack of visibility

It can be difficult for drivers to see pedestrians, especially when it is dark. You can help motorists notice you by using a flashlight or wearing bright clothing. Even though wearing dark clothing or failing to use a flashlight may not be illegal, it can put you at risk.
