Life after a lower back injury

Lower back pain is difficult to deal with on a daily basis. There are many different types of lower back injuries, including:

  • Herniated disc
  • The strain of ligaments and muscles
  • Spinal cord injury

You may experience mild to severe back pain as a result of a car, slip-and-fall or construction accident and have trouble managing your pain. Thankfully, it is possible to alleviate symptoms and treat back injuries. The following are some helpful tips for managing a lower back injury.

Use good posture and ergonomics

How you sit and stand directly affects how your lower back feels. Make sure you keep your back aligned and avoid slouching. Try to limit sitting time, especially on low and soft couches. If you must sit at a desk for work, ensure your chair has good lumbar or lower back support. Use a rolled-up towel or pillow for lumbar support if the chair does not have any and make sure your work area is at a comfortable height.

Avoid strenuous activities

The last thing you want to do is exacerbate injuries. Avoid heavy lifting or twisting your back for at least a few weeks after the injury. Stop exercising for the time being, as well. Your doctor or physical therapist can advise you on when to resume these types of activities.

Ask your doctor about treatment

Various ways to address lower back pain exist, including:

  • Pain medication
  • Ice or heat
  • Strengthening and stretching exercises
  • Massage

Consult with your health care professional to determine what types of treatments are right for you. If your back pain does not resolve with these treatments, your doctor may recommend other treatment options, including surgery.
