Stay safe around motorcyclists

As the weather begins to warm up in Ohio, drivers will notice there are more motorcyclists on the road. Accidents with motorcycles can be devastating, and there are certain safety tips all drivers should be aware of so everyone can share the road safely and accident free.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, motorcycle riders die in crashes 28 times more often than other motorists, and often the other vehicle operator is at fault. This is often because it is more difficult to see motorcyclists and predict how they are going to maneuver in certain situations. To prevent accidents from occurring, drivers of cars and trucks should understand it takes some special driving practices to share the road with motorcyclists.

The Texas Department of Public Safety outlines fundamental safety measures all drivers should follow when in the presence of a motorcycle. Drivers should be more visually aware of their surroundings. This is because motorcycles are smaller and narrower, making them harder to see at intersections and in lanes of traffic.

When driving behind a motorcycle, keep a fair distance. A motorcycle can usually stop faster than a vehicle, and the brake light may not activate, so it is important to leave more space for you to stop. This also allows motorcyclists to adjust positions in the lane safely.

All drivers and riders should use their turning signals when merging, changing lanes or turning in an intersection. This makes it clear to others on the road what your intentions are.

Finally, keep distractions to a minimum. Put your phone away, avoid eating in the car and be aware of your surroundings at all times.
