What is whiplash?

On Behalf of | Dec 30, 2018 | Car Accidents |

If you or someone in your family has been involved in a car accident in Ohio, you will want to know how to protect yourself or your loved one. Even the most minor fender bender accident has the ability to leave a person with an injury. In some cases, a physical injury caused by a vehicle crash may not always be evident immediately as symptoms may take a few days to manifest. Whiplash is one type of condition that is known to sometimes take a few days to appear.

As explained by WebMD, there can be some confusion among people about what whiplash really is. Some people think it is when the neck muscles are sprained but that is not true. A sprain in any part of the body happens when the ligaments that hold bones together are torn. This is not what happens in a whiplash injury. Instead, whiplash results when the muscles themselves or the tendons that hold the muscles to the bone are torn or even stretched.

A rapid, unexpected jerking of the head is a common cause of whiplash. This motion can often occur in a motor vehicle accident when a person is hit from the rear. A person with whiplash might get relief from anti-inflammatories but may need support such as a neck brace. Other therapies may include massages or ultrasound treatments.

This information is not intended to provide legal advice but is instead meant to give residents in Ohio an overview of what whiplash is and what symptoms they should be on the lookout for after a vehicle accident.
