Lower gas prices equals more cars and trucks on the road

Gas prices have been inching down since the beginning of the month, and now that the holiday season has started, less money at the pumps equals more cars on the road. More people on the roads equal more opportunities for accidents to occur.

What can you do to keep your family safe during the increased traffic times?

Know where you need to go before setting out

One of the most significant problems plaguing drivers is the temptation to multitask on the road. A big contributing factor to accidents is technology. GPS use increases during peak travel times. Whether your vehicle has GPS or you are using your phone, the distraction still exists. Review your route before leaving. If you are traveling with someone, put that person in charge of navigating. Minimize screen time while in the car.

Pay attention to construction zones

Between natural disasters and upgrades, many states have multiple roadway construction projects on the books. Construction zones are especially dangerous, especially when traffic is on the rise. When planning your route, take note of construction zones, especially those where lanes end. Merging tractor trailers on busy interstates may lead to fatal accidents.

Be patient

The best thing you can do is give yourself more than enough time to get to your destination. The tighter the timeline, the higher the stress and the more likely your driving may become more reckless. Speeding, distracted driving and short fuses may have troubling consequences.

Increased traffic equals increased traffic incidents. Avoid these accidents by slowing down, knowing your route and obeying construction area speed limits. Reducing your chances of getting in an accident and sustaining injuries while on the road should be a top priority all year long, not just during the holiday season.
