Know what to do when injured in an Uber

On Behalf of | Sep 27, 2018 | Firm News |

Ridesharing apps have skyrocketed in Ohio in recent years. It seems as though it has never been easier to find a ride, especially in larger cities like Cincinnati.

Although Uber and Lyft offer convenience, the drivers are not immune from being in crashes. You do not want to leave the scene of an accident should this ever occur to you. Instead, it is vital to follow these steps.

Ascertain any injuries

Minor fender benders may not result in much harm, but it is vital to consider your health. Even if you feel all right, it is still a good idea to call 9-1-1 and have an ambulance take you to the hospital. Some injuries may not be readily apparent, and you want to be absolutely certain nothing has broken or bruised.

Document the incident

As long as you are physically able to do so, you should collect evidence at the scene. This involves taking pictures of all vehicles involved and getting the other driver’s contact information. You also need to write down pertinent information related to your Uber or Lyft driver. This includes getting the driver’s insurance policy. Although many Uber drivers have a hard time bringing in sufficient income, they need to at least pay for auto insurance.

You should also speak to any witnesses who saw the accident. You do not have to get full statements at this time. It is possible to do that later. For now, you simply need to know whom you may need to talk to later and get yourself to a hospital.

Seek compensation if needed

It is extremely difficult to sue Uber and Lyft for damages. The reason is that the drivers for these apps are independent contractors and not regular employees. The driver’s insurance company should pay for all expenses, but if the insurance agency fails to cooperate, then you may need to pursue further legal action.
