Dog not seized or euthanized after attacking boy

| Jul 29, 2018 | Serious Injuries |

People in Ohio should be able to trust that if they are ever attacked by an unprovoked dog, authorities will work to ensure that dog is not allowed to hurt someone ever again. Unfortunately there are times when this means euthanizing the dog but if that is what it takes to prevent another attack on a human, that is what should happen. The decision to put a dog down after mauling a person should be made promptly yet in the case of one boy who required life flight to a hospital after being bitten by a dog, that did not happen.

According to WAFB, the boy was at a friend’s house and while playing was chasing his friend. It was during this chase that the dog, who is a pit bull, managed to get into the area where the boy was despite it being fenced off from where the dog was and then attack the boy. Even if the pit bull thought it was protecting its own person because it could not distinguish play chasing from non-play chasing, the attack was unwarranted and left the 12-year-old boy with serious injuries.

Reports indicate that the dog has bitten at least one other person in the past although there are no official reports of any prior incidents. Instead of taking the dog from the home immediately, authorities only quarantined it to its home for 10 days. Exactly what will happen to the dog remains unknown.

As for the boy who was attacked, he had to be taken by helicopter to a hospital and now faces a long road of recovery that includes plastic surgery and no doubt high costs for his family.
