As someone who works in the construction industry or who has a spouse or other family member employed in a construction-related job, you know that these occupations can be dangerous. The Ohio Bureau of Workers’ Compensation provides some insight into how prevalent an injury may be for people who work in construction or even in other fields. The 2016 Survey of Occupational Injuries and Illnesses show that statewide, 3.2 out of every 100,000 employees identified as full time in the construction industry experienced either a work-related injury or illness. Across all industries, that number was also 3.2 out of every 100,000 employees.
Injuries were involved in 96 percent of the 114,600 injury or illness cases in Ohio. Among the top factors involved with workplace injuries were falls, trips and slips and contact with objects. Both of these factors were associated with at least 26 percent of the injuries statewide. These are two factors oftenn referred to as the focus four topics for the construction industry. Ground surfaces, walkways or floors were noted in more than 19 percent of injury cases.
When it comes to parts of the body that were involved, backs topped the list with almost 18 percent followed by hands and heads with more than 13 percent and more than eight percent, respectively. Shoulders and knees were also in the top five.
