Can medication physically harm you?

On Behalf of | Apr 26, 2018 | Serious Injuries |

As a resident of Louisiana who relies on different medications for different health-related issues, you’re constantly placing your faith in the pharmaceutical industry. You trust that the things they provide you with are safe to use. Unfortunately, that may not always be the case, and you could end up seriously injured because of your trust.

As stated by WebMD, every medication you will ever take will come with some sort of side effect. Some may be extremely benign or hard to notice. Some could potentially be life-threatening. Of course, there’s also the risk of an allergic reaction any time you take a new medication.

It’s up to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to make sure that new medications are safe for general use before they’re released to the wider public. They will test for things like allergic reactions, poor metabolism of the drug, and the potential varying side effects that may occur. Unfortunately, the pool of people that they use for testing is oftenn much smaller than the pool of people who will end up taking the medicine. This causes two problems.

One, the FDA never really knows how the general population will react to a new medication. While most people could be predicted to be fine because of the trial test results, there could always be outliers. Two, the FDA also doesn’t oftenn know what the long-term effects of a new medication will be. The testing period usually doesn’t last a very long time, and certainly not as long as someone taking the medicine long-term.

Because of these issues, it’s possible to take a medicine that can – or already has – harmed you. If this is the case, you may benefit from contacting an injury attorney to see what your options are.
