Recognizing brain injury to a child after an auto accident

On Behalf of | Mar 10, 2018 | Car Accidents |

Parents make their best efforts to keep their children safe. Unfortunately, they are not able to save them from all harm. However, it may be possible to seek compensation for injuries from the accident, especially if they are the result of another party’s negligence.

In order to have a successful case, one must first prove the existence of the injury. There are a few ways to recognize brain injury in a child.

Symptoms

There are several different symptoms to look for, which may vary depending upon the age of the child. Older children may be able to voice what they are experiencing, such as headaches, blurred vision, dizziness or difficulty concentrating. However, infants or younger children who cannot express themselves are dependent upon adults to notice the symptoms. Some common ones that parents may watch for include:

  • Changes in nursing, sleeping or eating habits
  • Loss of interest or sad mood
  • Easily irritable
  • Persistent, inconsolable crying

These are some of the more common occurrences, but there may be others as well. When parents notice these signs or other things that seem out of the ordinary, it may be beneficial to seek medical attention.

Medical attention

Directly after the accident, it is very important that parents take their children in for medical review. Even if there are no visible injuries, there could be internal issues. A physician can do a full examination and make sure that the child is fine.

Check-ups

In general, it is beneficial for children to receive annual physicals. This check-up helps to make sure that the child is growing properly and not experiencing any preventable or treatable issues. In the off chance that an injury from an accident surfaces down the line, a physician may be able to catch and treat it before it creates further issues.

By staying mindful of these signs, parents may be able to recognize brain injury early on and get their children the help they need. If it is due to an accident, parents should consider consulting with an attorney and weighing their options.
