Holidays like Labor Day, provide a break from work and an opportunity to be with friends and family. However, holidays often also mean heavy traffic as many people travel and more people on the roads also increases the likelihood of auto accidents.
While some traffic accidents are unfavoidable, following these tips can help you steer clear of certain hazardous situations.
When possible, avoid heavy traffic
During the days leading up to and immediate following a major holiday, more people are on the road traveling to and from their destinations. Unfortunately, more drivers on the road also often equates to more reckless driving, road rage and rear-end accidents.
Whenever possible, it’s wise to avoid driving during peak travel times and to use alternate and less-traveled routes. If you can’t avoid traffic congestion, make sure you obey traffic laws and leave enough room between your vehicle and other motorists.
Be on the lookout for drunk drivers
Although operating a vehicle while intoxicated is illegal, many drivers underestimate the effects of alcohol or certain over-the-counter or prescriptions drugs and choose to get behind the wheel anyway. To prevent being involved in an accident with an impaired driver, watch for signs of drunk driving, such as:
- Drifting out of the lane
- Going above or below the speed limit
- Swerving
- Making illegal maneuvers
If you notice a driving displaying these dangerous behaviors, avoid the vehicle and report it to the police.
Avoid distractions
While phones and GPS devices may be helpful, they are also distracting. To keep distractions to a minimum, look up travel directions before starting out and turn off your cellphone so you’re not tempted to answer or use it. If you do need to make a call or send a text, pull over to a safe place first.
